Should I still use our Home Language?

As your child settles in an English speaking school, whether or not to 'stop' using your own home language may be a concern to some EAL parents.

There is a lot of research to suggest that the more highly developed a child’s first language is, the more successful they will be in acquiring a second language.

Therefore, continuing to use your first language as far as possible, alongside offering the support advised, will be central to your child’s communication, social and emotional development. Language links to your family, community and friends and this is vital for a young child’s sense of self.
